Category Manager at Devon and Owner of Bold Beautiful Brazilian

What does your typical supply chain work day look like? Describe a typical day for you.

As a category manager at Devon, I am responsible for developing procurement strategy for various categories, and a day at work will depend on the type of project I’m working on. If I’m developing a strategy for a category, I will start by analyzing the company spend on that category, the vendors utilized and the current agreements in place so that I understand what our commitments are, and who in the organization utilizes such services or goods. The analysis could take all day. Meetings with business units would follow, in order to gain a better understanding of our needs and the market place.

Why did you choose a career in the field of supply chain management?

In 2001, I was initially given an internship job in supply chain in Brazil. As I was fluent in English, the airline I was working for immediately placed me on the supply chain group to deal with international contracts. I didn’t specifically apply for that position but I’m thankful I was presented with it. Once in supply chain, I was exposed to the benefits that our team brought to the airline, and I knew I just wanted to keep growing in that field.

What do you enjoy the most about your work?

As a category manager you have to understand the company’s needs, the community’s desires, as well as the marketplace (suppliers, economy, etc.). The aspect I enjoy the most is that I am constantlylearning about the market from suppliers and internal stakeholders. It is fascinating to interact with different groups and discover how your commodity can affect all of them

How has PMAC (now SCMA) membership/SCMP accreditation been of value to you and your organization?

Having the SCMP designation has been very valuable to the organizations I’ve worked for. All the case studies I encountered during the accreditation process have proven to be of value when facing the challenges I’ve had so far. Meeting people through the PMAC functions has allowed me to share experiences with my peers, and their knowledge has also added great value to my work.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment?

I can’t really point to one specific accomplishment, as all the steps I’ve taken in my career have led me to where I am today. I’m very happy as a category manager; being able to add value to the organization as a whole makes me very proud. I now get to influence large projects and I can see the benefits my work brings to the company. Additionally, knowledge gained throughout my career has allowed me to open my own business, Bold Beautiful Brazilian (www.boldbeautifulbrazilian.com), an online store of Brazilian bikinis, lingerie and active wear, of which I am also very proud.

I have always viewed the opportunities and challenges of my career as an opportunity to learn and improve, which I like to focus on.
