Employer: SNC-Lavalin Inc.
City: Vancouver, BC

Why did you choose a career in the field of supply chain management?

On my return to Scotland, after completing a two-year assignment on a construction project in Nigeria, my employer had a vacancy to fill as a junior buyer for overseas projects. Due to limited prospects at the time I took the role, as I had previously gained low value purchasing experience both in Scotland and Nigeria. Now, as of 2010, I've completed 26 years in full-time SCM, with over 30 years in total of SCM experience.

Describe your current work; what is your role there?

My title is Director, Procurement & Contracts for SNC-Lavalin's Transportation Division in Vancouver. I'm currently responsible for overseeing the procurement of equipment, materials and construction contracts for the Division, including three major infrastructure projects, two in Calgary and one in Winnipeg.

What is your proudest professional accomplishment?

My proudest professional accomplishment was SNC-Lavalin Inc. being awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the Canada Line Rapid Transit System in Richmond and Vancouver, BC. This followed months of working nights and weekends finalizing the proposal costing.

How has PMAC (now SCMA) membership/SCMP accreditation been of value to you and your organization?

I certainly attribute a portion of my experience and knowledge gained to being a member of PMAC, attending PMAC events, and networking with other SCM professionals. Within weeks of arriving in Canada in 2003 I attended the BC Symposium in Whistler, which was an invaluable introduction to the supply chain community. I'm also a member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply in the U.K.

Tell us something interesting about yourself outside of SCM.

I have worked in Scotland, England, Nigeria, USA and Canada. I've relocated three times across the Atlantic Ocean. I'm interested in most sports, having played rugby and run marathons when I was younger. I now limit my involvement to occasional mountain biking, jogging or a round of golf, and I love watching football, hockey and Formula One.
