The supply chain management function has become increasingly recognized as the key driver of business performance. The SCMA Awards of Distinction™ are dedicated to recognizing the remarkable individuals and organizations that advance the supply chain management profession through innovative programs as well as thought leadership. Our annual awards set the benchmark for supply chain excellence in Canada.
- Ascendant Award – Presented to an individual who, early in their career, already demonstrates the characteristics of strong leadership, passion, innovation and creativity, and a dedication to the supply chain profession.
- Fellow Designation Award – Presented to an individual who is distinguished through demonstrated excellence in supply chain management, visionary leadership in driving innovation such as technology, diversity, and sustainability. It is the highest honour bestowed by the association.
- Supply Chain Excellence Award – Presented to an organization that is using strategic supply chain management to enhance its contribution to overall organizational objectives.
The deadline for submitting nominations for the 2018 Awards of Distinction is January 31, 2018.
This year, SCMA™ is thrilled to announce that we are bestowing the honour of Fellow of the Supply Chain Management Association (FSCMA) on two new supply chain leaders: LouAnn Birkett, CSCMP™, FSCMA™, and Glenn Gray, SCMP, FSCMA™.
For the first time ever, SCMA™ introduced the Ascendant Award. This year, it is presented to Katrina Daaca.
The 2017 Supply Chain Excellence Award was presented to Medbuy.
The awards will be presented during the SCMA National Conference™, at the Awards Gala Luncheon to be held on Thursday, June 15, 2017 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
To be awarded to a SCMA member who, early in their career, already demonstrates characteristics of strong leadership, passion, innovation and creativity, and a dedication to the supply chain profession. Not only does the nominee exhibit their personal commitment to their chosen career path, they are also inclined to influence and inspire others, either within their peer groups, or outwardly by expanding the awareness and understanding of supply chain functions and contributions, to our corporations, our communities and our economy.
Each Institute will be asked to nominate their best “Rising Star”.
Each of the Institute “Rising Stars” would be presented with a “Top 10” Certificate.
From the Top 10 Rising Stars, the Awards Committee would select the best of the brightest who would be awarded the Ascendant Award and invited to the annual conference and would be presented their award at the Awards Gala Luncheon, along with the other Awards of Distinction recipients.
Attributes of an ideal recipient (individual):
LEADERSHIP – The nominee is already demonstrating strong leadership characteristics, through their contribution to their employer, and/or to their colleagues and peers, through their mentorship and advocacy abilities.
INVOLVEMENT – The nominee contributes actively and regularly to their employer, beyond the level typically expected at their stage of employment and career development, and to their SCMA™ Institute through volunteer activities and participation in Institute events, and/or with their peers and colleagues by demonstrating strong leader characteristics.
CONTINUOUS LEARNING – The nominee has recently completed or is nearing completion of the SCMP Designation Program™ or the SMT Program, or is focused on related continuous professional development, through SCMA or other recognized training providers, maintaining a high standard of personal effort, and providing encouragement to classmates and/or work colleagues.
CAREER ACHIEVEMENT – The nominee is establishing their career on a solid foundation, contributing to their employer organization in one or more of the following manners:
- Identifying and contributing to the solution of a workplace challenge. Such contribution should be capable of being quantified through achieved savings, incremental profits, or similar measurable benchmarks.
- Contributing to the introduction of new processes, technology or information systems to improve supply chain functions within their organization. Such contribution should be possible to document though submitted reports, documentation trail, or affirmation of the contribution by the Nominee’s superiors.
- Proposing and gaining approval of revised processes or similar improvements that contribute to the enhanced strategic approach to supply chain functions within the organization. Such contribution should be possible to document though submitted reports, documentation trail, or affirmation of the contribution by the nominee’s superiors.
- Demonstrating an ability to “manage upwards”, with the knowledge and skill to use the ability sparingly, and/or the ability to “manage from the middle”, applying influence and guidance on peers, co-workers, suppliers and possibly colleagues within other departments or business units beyond their “official” capacity. Such abilities or contribution will be attested to by colleagues and/or superiors.
Who is Eligible? A supply chain professional, within their first five years of his/her career in supply chain, who is a resident of Canada and a member in good standing of the SCMA™ Institute in their province of residence.
Who Can Nominate? Any peer may nominate a potential candidate by submitting their nomination through the Home Institute of the nominee.
How Many Awards? It is the intention of SCMA™ to give one award based on the merits of the submissions.
To be awarded to an organization that has used innovative strategic supply chain management to advance its competitive advantage, furthering an understanding of the value of supply chain management. The organization shall also show support of SCMA's vision for the field by assisting its employees in pursuing education through SCMA™ courses, seminars and conferences. The award will identify and celebrate leadership among employers of all sizes and sectors in building critical, strategic and dynamic supply chains that contribute to business success.
Whether by the implementation of an original supply chain practice or process, the application of a new technology, or the development and utilization of talent, the winning organization will have helped to promote supply chain management and bring heightened recognition to the profession.
Attributes of an ideal recipient (organization):
- SCM Challenge/Opportunity – An SCM challenge or opportunity is clearly and convincingly defined
- Goals and Objectives – Measurable objectives are strategically aligned with the organization's mission, vision and goals
- Stakeholder Consideration – Views of key stakeholders (e.g., suppliers, colleagues, customers, community) are identified and considered
- Solutions-focused – Strategic thinking, innovation and leadership in problem-solving are demonstrated
- Implementation strategy – Initiative is effectively implemented and barriers to success overcome
- Evaluation and Accountability – Verifiable results satisfy objectives, increase SCM effectiveness and advance competitive advantage
Examples: Implementing strategic sourcing; creating a Chief Procurement/Supply Chain Officer role; developing an online buying tool; integrating suppliers into the product development process; launching a green or corporate social responsibility program.
Who is Eligible? Nominations are open to any organization operating in Canada and employing a current member or members in good standing of SCMA. The award will go to the organization’s senior executive.
Who Can Nominate? Anyone, including self-nominations.
How Many Awards? It is the intention of SCMA™ to give one award based on the merits of the submissions.
To be awarded to a SCMA™ member or others who have gained prominence in the business world through the field of supply chain management, and who, by their past or expected future achievements, serve as role models for others. The distinguishing qualities of an FSCMA™ are a demonstrated excellence in supply chain management, visionary leadership in driving innovations such as technology, diversity, sustainability, and a civic-mindedness that brings a community’s respect to the profession.
Admission to this "Fellowship" recognizes an individual has given conspicuous service to the association and/or profession through their efforts or has made a genuine contribution of new knowledge to the field.
Attributes of an ideal recipient (FSCMA™ Designation):
- Reflects dedication, balance and achievements in career and community
- Leadership, significant participation or contribution in the development and advancement of the supply chain management profession
- For nominees who are SCMA™ members: Leadership, significant participation or contribution to SCMA™, in supporting the activities and governance of the association
- Leadership, significant participation or contribution in the community-at-large through activities and community service
Examples: Introducing strategic supply chain management practices into an organization; chair or contributor/advisor to (or member of) a SCMA™ or Institute Board or Committee; member of a community Board of Directors or advisory group of a hospital, post-secondary institution or charity.
The classification of "Fellow" of the Supply Chain Management Association™ carries with it no special duties or rights. A recipient will be entitled to use the initials FSCMA™ following their name.
Who is Eligible? Any executive demonstrating supply chain leadership.
Who Can Nominate? SCMA members, non-members or Institutes.
How Many Awards? This award is based on the highest selection standards and will be capped at three awards per year.

Each year the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM) confers awards in recognition of contributions made by individuals to the development of the profession of purchasing and supply management. We are pleased to announce that the SCMA Fellow Award™ winner will automatically be put forward for IFPSM's Garner Thémoin Award - Advancement of the Profession Award.
As success can be determined in a number of ways, nominators are encouraged to include complete information in their application package to show how the nominee made a significant and valuable contribution.
Consistent with SCMA’s vision to be the leader in the development and advancement of world-class strategic supply chain management, winning nominations will be those that exhibit leadership and innovative thinking coupled with measurable impact.
All nominations will be reviewed by the SCMA™ Awards Committee, comprised of a jury of supply chain management professionals, and are based on scoring criteria for each award. The Awards Committee selects the winners and makes recommendations to the SCMA Board of Directors™, who confirms the successful nominees.
Winners will be honoured at the SCMA National Conference™. Complimentary National Conference registration and expenses to attend the presentation ceremony for the individual award recipients and a representative of the organizational award will be covered by SCMA™.
Winners will have their name and company listed on the SCMA™ website, providing peer and public recognition. They may also benefit from media exposure in print or broadcast.
