Consumers have benefitted from Nestlé’s leadership in quality food products for 150 years. In 1866 Nestlé’s history began as the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company offering consumers a safe long-life alternative to fresh milk. The following year Henri Nestlé developed a breakthrough infant food to tackle high mortality rates for infants who could not be breastfed. Canned milk products imported from Europe first hit Canadian shelves in 1887. Manufacturing in Canada began in 1918 and four years later the company was incorporated as Nestlé’s Food Company of Canada Limited. Today the company has approximately 3,500 employees in over 20 manufacturing, sales, and distribution sites across Canada, with annual sales in 2014 of approximately $2.3 billion.
When it comes to raising the bar of excellence for public libraries, the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) has been leading the way for over 100 years. In fact, EPL was the first North American library to offer a bookmobile through a converted streetcar back in 1941 and also the first Canadian library to move to a computerized circulation system in 1979. Things haven’t slowed down since, as EPL was the first urban Canadian library to implement RFID technology back in 2007, and also the first in Canada to offer both a lending machine and a return chute off-site in 2010, and to develop its own iPhone app.
Persuading surgeons to recognize the benefits of supply chain management in the operating room is no easy task. But Martin Montanti has done it. As vice-president for corporate services at Southern Health-Santé Sud, one of Manitoba’s five regional health authorities, Mr. Montanti has overseen an ambitious project that aims to standardize not only supplies, but also procedures at several dozen hospitals, long-term care centres and other health-care facilities.
What began as a project to streamline office space for Edmonton’s municipal workers has ended up as an ambitious attempt to contribute to revitalizing the city’s downtown core – and shown just how much a bold and imaginative procurement process can accomplish.
