What better place to have a mid-summer boat show than Harbor Island, the seaside hub of San Diego recreational boating. Now in its seventh year, the San Diego Yacht and Boat Show, July 22-25, is not only the largest consumer boat show in the San Diego area, but it offers a rare blend of elegance and serenity thanks to the luxurious Sheraton Hotel/Marina and adjacent Cancer Survivors Park venue.

I want to thank all of the SCMA members and friends who attended Terry Tjaden's retirement party on June 28 at our office in Orange. It was a bittersweet occasion as we will all miss Terry's extraordinary work ethic, many contributions and vast knowledge of the industry after 23 years at SCMA, but knowing that he will have more family time to enjoy with his wife Gina, two daughters and son-in-laws and grandchildren is certainly well deserved. I'm sure many of Terry's good friends and co-workers will be staying in close contact with him at his new home in Oregon. On behalf of everyone at SCMA, Terry and Gina, we wish you all the best.

Celebrate Summer and Our Nation's Birthday - Get Your Customers to go Boating!
The sailing industry has just completed an interesting promotional event designed to get boaters out on their boats around the world. It is called Summer Sailstice. It is done on the longest weekend (daylight hours) of the year (in the Northern Hemisphere). That means closest to the Summer Solstice as possible (June 21). They have a national promotion that is run out of Northern California by a non profit group - but the intention is to bring boaters out on their sail boats.

High-end retailers like Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus have reported stronger sales. Cadillac and SRX crossover SUV sales tripled this spring over last. The confidence of small businessmen showed a healthy increase in May, and the retail sale of new boats is on the edge of positive territory.
Is the “luxury buyer” really returning? Many signs are pointing to yes. Some say the buyer may be more practical, still bargain-hunting, less flamboyant and pickier. But he’s definitely back on the radar screen.

California Fish and Game Commission Will Hold MLPA Scoping Meetings for South Coast Region Commission reluctantly agrees to schedule one meeting for public input on proposed marine protected areas
In response to requests made by the Partnership for Sustainable Oceans (PSO), United Anglers of Southern California (UASC) and the city of Redondo Beach, the California Fish and Game Commission has agreed to schedule one scoping meeting for the South Coast phase of the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) at a time, date and place to be announced. The decision was announced during the June 23-24, commission meeting held in Folsom, Calif.
Scoping meetings provide the public, stakeholder organizations, governmental agencies and other interested parties the chance to weigh in on issues related to the potential environmental effects of marine protected area proposals being considered by the commission.
The PSO, UASC, and the city of Redondo Beach each submitted letters requesting scoping meetings after learning that the Fish and Game Commission initially intended to bypass the scoping meeting process for the South Coast Region.

The Environmental Protection Agency will delay until the fall a decision on whether more ethanol than the current 10 percent limit can be blended into gasoline, according to media reports.
The EPA had been expected to render its decision this month. Growth Energy, an organization representing the nation's ethanol producers, has petitioned the EPA for a waiver to allow ethanol blends of up to 15 percent.

The short-term outlook for the boating industry remains clouded; however, despite these challenges the recreational boating market (including boats, propulsion systems and accessories) will rebound from its depressed 2009 levels, with demand rising 9.3 percent annually to $10.1 billion in 2014. Demand will be driven by gains in consumer spending and disposable income, while the recovery in financial markets will enable more consumers to buy boats on credit. Growth in the 55-64 age bracket will also support demand, since boat purchases become more likely just prior to retirement (although they tend to decline thereafter) and consumers in that age group have the disposable income to purchase larger, more expensive vessels. In addition, the industry’s effort to market the “boating lifestyle” to women and minorities should expand the market. However, even with the rapid sales growth, the market is not expected to recover to the pre-downturn levels until the end of the decade. These and other trends are presented in Recreational Boating, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm.
