Accredited Diploma in Procurement and Supply Chain Management Program Frequently Asked Accreditation Questions

The Diploma in Procurement and Supply Chain Management of Supply Chain Management Association Ontario (SCMAO) is accredited by the Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council through its National Accreditation Program (the NAP).

Please note: New diploma registrants starting the program in September, 2015 will automatically be enrolled in the accredited format of the program. For registrants who are currently enrolled in the program the completion requirements will not change. Any current participant who wishes to graduate from the accredited format will need to take a total of seven seminars.

1. What is the National Accreditation Program?

The National Accreditation Program (NAP) was established to recognize supply chain-related educational offerings that meet the Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council's national standard. The NAP standard – developed in partnership with the Canadian Standards Association and with significant input from supply chain stakeholders – reflects industry's needs and best practices on a national level.

2. What does accreditation mean?

When a program is accredited this means that a review panel of industry experts and education professionals in the field has assessed the program and recognize it as meeting national industry standards for intermediate level professionals. The program itself is accredited. The graduates do not receive an accreditation.

3. What is the difference between the Certified SCMP program and the accredited diploma program?

The diploma program is an intermediate level program, which allows participants to continue to build their professional abilities and advance to the next level in their careers.

The  accreditation status of the program means that an impartial panel, in this case the Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council (CSCSC), deems that the program equips participants with the knowledge of best practices and developments in their field on a national level. This ultimately allows graduates to update and upgrade their skills and knowledge to make a meaningful impact in the supply chain management field and thereby meeting the needs of employers.
A professional certification, also known as a designation, means that the professional has been comprehensively evaluated to test their competencies at a senior level against the standards of their industry. A professional certification/designation also typically has a maintenance component requirement. The diploma program does not have a maintenance component.

CSCMP graduates are required to adhere to a professional code of conduct and demonstrate continual learning development by obtaining a required amount of professional learning credits every three years. It is also mandatory that they maintain their SCMAO membership to keep their designation valid.

4.  Will accredited diploma graduates be able to use any designatory letters after their name?

Graduates of the accredited program do not attain post-nominal initials after their name. Graduates will have the confidence that the quality of the program has been reviewed by an external body (the Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council through its National Accreditation Program (the NAP), which has assessed the program and find it to be in excellent standing. This will increase the value and respect for the program in the eyes of employers and other supply chain professionals.

5. What is the difference between the requirements of the pre-accredited format of the diploma program and the accredited format, which starts September 2015?

While the program requirement for the accredited version have been increased to include two additional seminars and related subject areas, the depth and breadth gained contribute to the professional's overall skills and knowledge.

6. How will current diploma graduates be affected?

Current graduates who wish to have an accredited diploma are required to take two additional seminars by December 2016. The current diploma continues to be valuable within the industry. The accreditation awarded by the CSCSC through its National Accreditation Program officially gives the program national recognition and the CSCSC recognition elevates the brand.
