The overall goal of any program leading to a professional credential or designation is to produce competent professionals through an appropriate mix of general education, professional education, and practical experience. Practical experience gained from performing the work of professionals, in addition to the acquisition of knowledge through an academic requirement, is generally considered necessary before candidates can present themselves to the public as a professional.

Candidates will be required to have at least three years of practical experience in supply chain management in order to obtain their SCMP™. This experience can be in any aspect of the field of practice, including core and supporting areas, but must be full-time and demonstrate progressive levels of competence through applied knowledge acquired while pursuing SCMP™ accreditation.

This growth in competence will be demonstrated by the successful performance of work activities and job functions that advance incrementally in both scope and responsibility. Career progression or advancement may typically be achieved through lateral/horizontal or vertical movement within the same organization or across multiple enterprises.

Practical-Professional Experience

Only program candidates who satisfy the following practical-professional experience requirement shall be considered eligible for professional accreditation:

  • A minimum of 3 years of progressive practical experience to be completed in the field of practice of supply chain management (encompassing core and supporting areas), of which:
    • at least six months must have been in a supervisory/managerial (eg. people/contract management) capacity
    • no more than 1 year of related practical experience gained prior to enrollment as an accreditation program candidate may be recognized/applicable toward this requirement.
  • Progressive practical experience describes the applicable period/s of career progression/advancement during which the candidate has had occasion to effectively apply in his/her employment/professional situations, the progressive levels of competence acquired while pursuing SCMP™ accreditation, as evidenced in the successful performance of job functions that progress incrementally in both scope and responsibility.
  • Career progression/advancement may typically be achieved through lateral/horizontal or vertical movement within the same or across multiple enterprises:
    • Vertical Movement: the candidate moves from one position or functional level to another within the same company or across companies, usually accompanied by a change in position title and with commensurate levels of progressively greater responsibility, accountability (typically including budget-financial and staffing aspects) and decision rights.
    • Lateral/Horizontal Movement: the candidate moves within the same functional level or the same position (no change in job title or classification), but has the opportunity to assume functional responsibilities that have increasingly greater strategic orientation, accountability (possibly including budget-financial and staffing aspects) and active involvement and participation in decision-making.

Admission and Pre-qualification

As part of program candidate admission/enrollment process, the applicant must provide details and proof of any prior practical experience that is being applied for recognition towards the experiential requirement. A maximum of 1 year will be applied towards the Practical-Professional Experience for previous work history.

Subsequently, throughout the pre-qualification/pre-certification period, the candidate must report details of practical experience on an annual basis, or more frequently as may be necessitated by a change in:

  • job-position (title change), and/or
  • employer organization, or
  • employment status
