How to Prepare Your Team

The Supply Chain Management Association™ is bringing some of the leading supply chain students from across Canada for a supply chain case competition that will focus the students on resolving real world strategic and tactical challenges. They may examine topics such as logistics, network design, relationship management and sustainability.

This event gives students a great opportunity to showcase their skills to real-world scenarios in front of leading companies and build their professional networks. During the competition the students will analyze critical supply chain parameters through a case study, providing the scenario and some background details with quantitative data for the analysis. Students will have approximately 4 hours to work through their recommendations to present to the judges, comprised of industry professionals and academic leaders.

Working in their teams, the students will explore a scenario pertaining to a supply chain problem. The teams will develop recommendations based on their research, data analysis and study of financial implications. A panel of industry and academic judges will adjudicate the presentations.

The proposal will be evaluated on not just the solution (functional skills) but also on presentation format and delivery (communication skills). The solution’s link to the company’s strategy will be evaluated along with the cost or savings estimated, and how well they addressed the root cause of the main problem in the case. A solid understanding of the issues and a logic flow throughout the presentation will be measured as well as the originality of the proposal. Penalties will be awarded for misuse of time in both preparation and presentation.

The case study, marking criteria, USB stick with the case and case material loaded on it, pens, paper, cue cards and highlighters will be provided to each team in the morning. Forty-five minutes into the case preparation an SCMA representative will collect one clarifying question from each team; the answers to these questions will be provided to all teams. Teams will have 20 minutes to present their case solution to the judges. The objective is to give a clear understanding of the recommendations and to share the rationale.

The competition will see teams divided regionally (West and East) for the first round with the top teams advancing to a national competition.
